Q: It is okay to use soap nuts to wash your dishes.

I picked up three Subway receipts on the ground today. Each of those receipts can be traded in for a free cookie. I did just that and gave them away to a homeless guy. It has been raining the whole day, and I know how cold it is. I’ve picked the thrash, exchanged for food and feed another human being. We have to live either way. I don’t like giving money away to the homeless no more. From what I’ve observed in the past, money has the potential for abuse. Some people don’t know how to make informed decisions, and prefer to rely on their impulses. Hence, they may use the money for drugs, alcohol, and sodas.

If you truly mean well and want to do charity, ask them what they need and buy it for them.

Just men,

Q: Do you want a slice of apple pie?

Watching NHK ni Yokoso! made me relive my short hikikomorish moments. Looking back, I see the motivation behind not wanting to move forward. I was way too comfortable with life. Anything that threatens that put me on edge. I avoided talking about the future, beating the eggs to froth instead while I stared at screens for hours. Now that I think about it, I finished FMA and dozens of other series in a binge-like manner.

Now that I’ve realized the importance of time and the need to contribute to society, the baggage was packed with the intention to move forward. Despite the pressures to achieve a lot at a limited time, I’ve learned to adopt and accept a ‘my pace’ attitude to life. I’d rather do well, than cut corners just to reach a goal. But I have honestly yet to fully yearn adulthood. I have dreams that I want fulfilled, and as always I don’t know how or when I’ll get there, but I want to see it happen.

Go and fight again,
Vonnie S.

Q: This isn't weird, right?

I have dabbled a little in Adobe Illustrator across the years since my college days, but have since lost touch. The program itself is expensive, and unless you’re playing with it every day, it is not worth the investment. But I downloaded it yesterday out of curiosity and to view a business card designed by my friend. Of all things, the file had to be in .ai format.

After placing order on more mailing labels and a box of business cards, I was back to the laptop reading. I don’t know why, but it is an anxious moment I can’t quite explain. Every day my palm sweats. Every day my nerves go haywire. Is it the food I eat? Is it the nights I don’t sleep? Is it the unknown future I’ll soon tread? Or simply the approaching deadline I may fail to meet?

Either way, I hope to get out of this routine. Speaking to mom helps calm the anxiety, as I remind myself that no matter how rough the road ahead is, those who persevere will win in the end. J

Evergreen tree,
Vonnie S.

Q: Find your way to the harbor of your dreams...

I’m so sorry guys and gals, I have done a blasphemy on ya’ll by not doing actual blog postings. The semester has passed its midlife crisis, which means that I have but little over a month left to summer. Be warned that it’ll go on temporary hiatus. Assume nothing new is happening apart from books, journals, assignments, and research proposals.

But first I’ll update you on some changes that took place over March Madness. One, my roommate has left my nest for good. I am sincerely happy for her, despite all the tension between us; I mean why shouldn’t I be? From one human being to another, I know that she’s going to make meaningful changes in the study of health. If anything, I should just not complain anymore since I’ve gotten back my private space.

Two, I won’t be going to San Diego. Ika won’t be coming here in July. All because of the failure to obtain the Comic Con tickets. Reminder to self to CAMP for it next year. I was merely late to the virtual queue by fifteen minutes and already the tickets sold out. You didn’t read wrong, there was literally a cietual queue. After three hours of screen staring, I walked out with nothing. Hence, she has decided to come in August. I’ll probably plan to go to Washington DC with her or perhaps Otakon if she’s coming during that weekend.

You guys ought to remove the caps and make more $$!
Three, my move to the pedic is finalized. I am very excited for this change, and look forward to learning more things. That’s all I have for now peeps. Will catch you later in summer I suppose!

Immortal,
Vonnie S.

The Marketing Story

What is MARKETING ?
This is how a Professor explained Marketing Concepts to a class:
1. You see a Gorgeous Girl at a party. You go up to her and say: "I am very rich. Marry me!"
- That's Direct Marketing.
2. You are at a party with a bunch of friends and see a Gorgeous Girl. One of your friends goes upto her and pointing at you says: "He's very rich.Marry him!"
- That's Advertising.
3. You are at a party and see a Gorgeous Girl. She walks up to you and says: "You are very rich! Can I marry you?"
- That's Brand Recognition.
4. You see a Gorgeous Girl at a party. You go upto her and say: "I am very rich. Marry me!" She gives you a nice hard slap on your face.
- That's Customer Feedback.
5. You see a Gorgeous Girl at a party. You go up to her and say: "I am very rich. Marry me!" And she introduces you to her husband.
- That's Demand and Supply Gap.
6. You see a Gorgeous Girl at a party. You go upto her and before you say: "I m rich, Marry me!", your wife arrives.
- That's Restriction for Entering New Markets.

I hope Concepts are clear.
Be happy always!

The Daffodil Principle (Part II)

The flowers were planted in majestic, swirling patternsgreat ribbons and swaths of deep orange, white, lemon yellow, salmon pink, saffron, and butter yellow. Each different-colored variety was planted as a group so that it swirled and flowed like its own river with its own unique hue. There were five acres of flowers. “But who has done this?” I asked Carolyn.

“It’s just one woman,” Carolyn answered. “She lives on the property. That’s her home.” Carolyn pointed to a well-kept A-frame house that looked small and modest in the midst of all that glory. We walked up to the house. On the patio, we saw a poster. “Answers to the Questions I Know You Are Asking” was the headline:

The first answer was a simple one. “50,000 bulbs!” it read.
The second answer was, “One at a time, by one woman. Two hands, two feet, and very little brain.”
The third answer was, “Began in 1958.”

There it was: The Daffodil Principle. For me, that moment was a life changing experience. I thought of this woman whom I had never met, who, more than 35 years before, had begun, one bulb at a time, to bring her vision of beauty and joy to an obscure mountain top. Just planting one bulb at a time, year after year, this unknown woman had forever changed the world in which she lived. She had created something of ineffable magnificence, beauty, and inspiration.

The principle her daffodil garden taught is one of the greatest principles of celebration. That is, learning to move toward our goals and desires one step at a timeoften just one baby step at a timeand learning to love the doing, learning to use the accumulation of time. When we multiply tiny pieces of time with small increments of daily effort, we too will find we can accomplish magnificent things. We can change the world.

“It makes me sad in a way,” I admitted to Carolyn. “What might I have accomplished if I had thought of a wonderful goal 35 years ago and had worked away at it ‘one bulb at a time’ through all those years? Just think what I might have been able to achieve!” My daughter summed up the message in her direct way. “Start tomorrow,” she said.

It’s pointless to think of the lost hours of yesterdays. To make learning a lesson a celebration instead of a cause for regret, simply ask, “How can I put this to use today?”

Note: In 2009, the devastating wildfire that burned through the mountains around San Bernardino, destroying homes and taking people’s lives, also destroyed Ms Bauer’s little A-frame home and beautiful gardens. The following Spring, to everyone’s delight, the Daffodils bloomed again.

The Daffodil Principle (Part I)

Received this in the mail from The Mute Swan:

The Daffodil Principle

Several times my daughter had telephoned to say, “Mother, you must come see the daffodils before they are over.”

I wanted to go, but it was a two-hour drive from Laguna to Lake Arrowhead. “I’ll come next Tuesday, ” I promised, a little reluctantly, on her third call.

Next Tuesday dawned cold and rainy. Still, I had promised, and so I drove there. When I finally walked into Carolyn’s house and hugged and greeted my grandchildren, I said, “Forget the daffodils, Carolyn! The road is invisible in the clouds and fog, and there is nothing in the world except you and these children that I want to see bad enough to drive another inch!”

My daughter smiled calmly and said, “We drive in this all the time, Mother.”

“Well, you won’t get me back on the road until it clears, and then I’m heading home!"

“I was hoping you’d take me to pick up my car, it’s just a few blocks away.” I’ll drive. I’m used to this.

***

After several minutes, I had to ask, “Where are we going? This isn’t the way to the garage!”

Carolyn grinned, “We’re going to my garage by way of the daffodils.”

“Carolyn, please turn around,” I said sternly.

“It’s all right, Mother. I promise. You will never forgive yourself if you miss this experience.”

After about twenty minutes, we turned onto a small gravel road and I saw a small church. On the far side of the church, I saw a hand-lettered sign that read, “DAFFODIL GARDEN”.

We got out of the car and each took a child’s hand, and I followed Carolyn down the path. Then, we turned a corner and I looked up and gasped. Before me lay the most glorious sight. It looked as though someone had taken a great vat of gold and poured it over the mountain peak and slopes.

Q: You're a good girl and you know it.

One of those random conversations with the roommate;

Me: If the capital city of South Korea is Seoul, what is the capital city of North Korea?

Her: Palm!

She misheard “Seoul” as “Sole”.

Real news,
Vonnie S.

Q: A slap to Teresa is a slap to women.

I want it that way. You do not tell me what to do when you’re in my territory. Especially so, since I learn nothing new from it. Geez, who am I kidding. I took this bug up my ass, and the adult thing to do is dealing with it. Funny, I honestly felt a power struggle within the space. But she doesn’t understand. This should not be a power struggle. You’re in Vonnieland. Simply put, we allow fun but go overboard, and we’re sounding the security. It’s written here on these walls, strictly no renovation.

Keep telling myself. Two more months.

O wait. You just came up to me to say that you brought a friend and she’s coming this Sunday. Great, just great. Let me put this into context for you. I respect people and where they come from; so don’t take it for granted. Don’t abuse my respect for you. Look at you, talking loudly on your phone for hours into the night. Your mom even reminded you that your behavior may bother me, but clearly you’re not the sort to listen.

Chewing my lips. Need to chap that.

Dolly faced,
Vonnie S.

Q: Vaio is history.

I’ve nailed Payphone by the melody. Rhythm has yet to come together, but for what it’s worth, 20 minutes on the guitar each day is taking me closer to perfection. The roommate wishes to record the song, but the mistakes wouldn’t allow for public hearing. Including this song, I’ve 20 fingerstyles by memory. Next up, We Were In Love (revised) because I need to belt one Korean at least. I can see this pacing bring me up to thirty songs by the end of the year. Well, I am optimistic in that respect. Ten songs per year? Consider it done.
Eh, what is this dinner invite I got right here? It’s for…tonight?! Meh, I think kofta is decent for today. All’s good here. Don't think I want to stay up all night for it tho. I am not afraid of the homeless, I am afraid of the cold.

String change,
Vonnie S.

Q: Sometimes cameras catch what the eye can’t see.

Classes just started. Both are going by the hands off concept; one takes the discussion route and the other chooses interteaching. Perfect, I look happy. Take the bull by the horns, eh?

My first study partner is EliP. We were diving through the attitudes of science for four points. Everything in life happens as a result of others (determinism). Do direct observation of people before making decisive judgment (empiricism). When in doubt, test out your theory (experimentation). If it works for others, it may not necessarily work for you. Copy, but learn from mistakes (replication). Pick the simplest and most logical explanation; forget the beat-around-the-bush shiz (parsimony). Doubt statistics; don’t make them govern your consumption choices (philosophical doubt).

There. I paid attention.

On the map,
Vonnie S.

Q: You have to eat either way.

I am stuffed. After a spinach dish (done right with chapatti), I sat down at the bookstore to finish up on Sket Dance and this blog post. I realized that this may be the last anime series I’ll watch more than two episodes in a row for the year. Beginning tomorrow, I promised to work hard.

Anyway, I’ll recap what happened yesterday. We, I mean PF, S and myself went out for grocery shopping. We literally spent half the day shopping. No kidding. We started with Great Wall in the morning. The store recently opened nearby, and was recommended for its cheaper prices compared to H Mart. This preference may be partially due to most products being Chinese-based rather than Korean-based. I was right and the selection was expansive. To prove my point, they sold Malaysian Durians as well. Here us two Chinese were shopping, S decided to be on the phone from entrance till checkout.

Want to know what’s funny tho? Our next stop was at Patel Brothers, an Indian store. She went in so quick and spent a good hour there without ever touching her phone. I don’t know. Perhaps we just need some time apart. Doing everything together can get pretty boring with her behaving like this, plus I did mentioned before how much I hate people touching their phones when they are out with others. It’s almost to say that “I am bored”.

With some time left, we darted forth to H Mart. There, she repeated her antics. Sigh, at least I managed to shop my essentials. Throughout the morning, S kept guilt tripping us for choosing to eat buffet at a Chinese place. She cited a fellow Indian who mentioned that if one eats at a Chinese restaurant, they may develop some sort of allergy. Imagine this person repeatedly tells you that he/she will eat elsewhere for lunch while we are ‘allowed’ to go eat that buffet. But I was kind. I actually suggested a place change, but PF was stubborn.

In the end, there wasn’t a choice but for her to come in along with us. Guess what, she ended up loving the place. Geez, I realized that there is a limit to being a princess. And kids, that is not how you do it okay?

Last name,
Vonnie S.

Q: Souls know no age.

Drive a car for several reasons. First, the city is crawling with aggressive vehicles, big and small. They are fast, furious, and desperate to go places. Second, I hate to deal with the package that comes along with owning a car. You know what I’m saying right; the installments, insurance, parking ticket, and gas. Third, a car is a personal liability. This property you leave it unguarded in the open and anyone may jack it if they like. Fourth, I don’t like dealing with the stress. Here, I’m referring to bad traffic and bad road conditions. You’d curse, throw tantrums, and don’t even get me started if you spilt coffee all over the seats. Fifth, I honestly prefer walking for now. There’s so much to see that I don’t get to if I’m riding at 40mph. Most important of all, I am content with a carless life.

You might think I’m talking about a car. But you know what euphemism means though? Yea, someone asked me yesterday why I don’t do the fornication. Haha!

Vonnie S.

Q: Just so you know, your table is open.

Yea right. HJ ffked me again. Her reason being someone has decided to show up to check out her place. She’s getting a new roommate because her current one has given up on PhD. I wasn’t upset one bit. It helps when you’re expecting the no-show to happen. I didn’t want her to come here too. The weather was bad enough and that sudden death was simply startling. But I dealt that lonely night well. I spent it video recording the snowfall, and talking to my phone. My roommate sure had fun with my works. She came home at midnight, and was still wide awake. Chuckling away the cold by watching my videos.

Come go,
Vonnie S.

Q: I guess things just didn't twerk out...

I said I had a bizarre week right?  The broken blind seemed to be a foreshadowing for the tragedy that struck on Tuesday night. You see, my roommate left for Michigan that morning in the midst of bad weather. The sky and its severe case of dandruff put me in a rather difficult position. I was heading out to the post office to deliver some mails, and the winds picked up fast. Blew me out of the bus downtown, but I managed to do what I needed to do. Collected two store cards (Walgreens & Rite Aid), and bought eight rolls of paper towels for four dollars!

At minus fourteen Celcius outside, I say I did great. Once I got home at 2pm, the outside world looked like a Winter Wonderland theme park.

Here things get jarring. I had a moment of terror and sadness that night. Around 9pm, I had the sudden urge to ride the elevator down to the mailroom. But there was a knock at the door. Cops. Their business? A neighbor was found dead inside his room (for more than a week). There was some chatter in the hallway. Other neighbors flushed out from their rooms, and for the first time we talked. The cops took his body out into the elevator and they disappeared almost as quickly as they came.

Eventually we retired into our respective homes. There were some scary thoughts, but above that I felt grief. He lived alone and left the physical world alone. Us neighbors hardly even know we each existed on the same floor. The same thing can happen to anyone of us. Before I went to sleep, I told myself that I won’t ever want to end my life that way.

Everything in life,
Vonnie S.

Q: Only a little tiny, tiny part of you missing

What a bizarre week! On Monday, I came home to a broken blind. Roommate didn’t know how to work a simple blind and decided to rough house it into submission. The blinds were defeated and came down in pieces. The aftermath left her panicking because she feared that I would scold her for the mishap. You think I’d be angry over this? Not one bit. I was laughing upon reading the unfortunate text. Well, I thought to myself as I clapped my hands, at least I don’t have to clean that anymore.

Upon simulation of what actually happened, I was flabbergasted. Look, you have two strings. If you pull on one of them, and only one side of the blinds rise to form a fan, almost automatically you should be aware that the other string controls the other portion. You may even proceed to lower down before pulling both. Or you may even tug on the other one to even them out before pulling both. In general, you’d end up pulling both strings right? My roommate did the left-right maneuver and the gears got stuck. You’re not milking some cow, girl!

On Tuesday, the maintenance guy came over to fix it. He also dropped me a notification on how much it would cost us. Not that it mattered since the roommate offered to pay for it. Guess the only fun in this accident was the conversation I had with the management. No, I didn’t hold any party last night. Yes, I tugged on it hard. My bad. “Next time, please contact us when it gets stuck. We’ll send the guys up to handle that for you.”

Puh-lease,
Vonnie S.

Q: You have one job only...how?

I don’t drink coffee. But this caffeinated chocolate bar has seized me by the collar. I hope I won’t get hooked on this guilty pleasure for long, though I have to admit that I have been indulging in chocolate squares ever since PF gave me that large box of Ghirardelli’s. Don’t think I’ve put on much weight either because I have been carefully avoiding carbohydrates. I still eat my chapatti every now and then though, thanks to the roommate.

Speaking of the roommate, she’s leaving to Michigan for a job interview tomorrow. We just laughed about this last night saying that she’s moving from chill land to cold land. Apart from the peaceful serenity, I have one more reason to smile too since Jun will be coming for a sleepover.  And we’re going for Nando’s later on Wednesday.

A reminder for myself to mail things out too; I’ve managed to sell four of those lil M&M’s key chains. And people won’t want to wait long for their item.

I am imagining myself laughing. Did I just see this one dude doing the gun point at his laptop after speaking to it? He looks so happy too. Wonder what's the deal about?

Q: Feeling brave to watch scary movie alone late night...

I can be so impatient sometimes. Like when I pull the plug before my laptop has the chance to appropriately shut down. Like when I check eBay almost every hour to see if anyone bids on anything. Like when I self-talk myself to walk faster to the bus stop, only to see the vehicle arriving ten minutes later. Like when I want to make sure the kitchen is all clean after dinner that I accidentally burnt myself by touching the hot stove. Like when I watch my anime (applicable on boring series only), I play them on 2x speed. Like when I do online purchase, I expect the product to arrive no later than a week. (Sometimes I get them early, and on other days, a month after.) Like when I choose to sell cheap only to rid the furniture. Like when I am famished, I don’t stop for the microwave to finish heating the food, so I am always left with still-frozen corn.

Thank goodness I don’t drive like that. Or eat. Or be productive…

Over here,
Vonnie S.

Q: Typing this while she's sitting across from me is rather therapeutic...

My roommate pulled the whole passive aggressive act on me this morning. Was I gonna flip the bird or carefully ask her what’s wrong, I no longer remember. But I am aware that she pushed the chair roughly to the side that it hit another chair hard enough to produce a loud thud. As she mopped the floor (again all this on her own accord) she pushed the mop head, taking my socks with it into the heater. You must be kidding me, right? She knocked a couple of poster tubes down and never bothered to pick them up. Discreetly, that type of behavior is telling me this, “You should be cleaning this up, and why am I doing this for you?” Alas, we don’t talk as much as we used to; to hell with courtesy and considerations. I guess the honeymoon period is over and she’s grown too comfortable. You know they say that even the non-venomous snakes need to shed their skins.

I simply ignored her. You might then say it’s unhealthy. That I should talk it out with her and settled the business. But here’s the deal. She best counts her stars now that I am unusually patient. Pull that kinda stunt once more and she’ll be looking up for some time travelling classes to smack her old self in place. I am not even going to suck up to her. Woman, please ask yourself why you can stay at such a convenient location in the first place before you go PMSing just because you want to. I hope you realize that I can send you packing anytime with just a phone call since your name is not on the lease. Tsk, I dislike people who bite the hands that feed them. Seriously…while you're at it, take your loud (and exceptionally long) phone calls and equally loud replays of Bollywood songs with you.

Keep in view,
Vonnie S.

Q: I want to take pottery lessons...

Some of you folks have expressed your liking toward the anime picture inserts I’ve craftily embedded into two posts so far. I am looking to begin such trend, especially since I might try to start an anime review blog next year.  It’s good to practice using them, I suppose. Heck, if it means entertaining my readers, I believe going the extra mile for the screenshots is at least worth something now. Might as well pluck a flower or two if you’re climbing that hill. Okay, perhaps that anecdote didn’t work as well as I thought it would.

No I’m not. Please, there are better things to be pissed about…for instance, having to pay the freaking bill. No good. I need to meditate with some pleasant instrumental songs before I piss myself all over. Would you like to recommend some? I’ve realized that I’ve used the word “some” like five times in this post alone. Will do something about it.

Ahcya,
Vonnie S.

Q: Cause you never suggest?

Don’t ever underestimate what you can or cannot sell on eBay. Most items that left to new owners were bought or received some point in time at conventions, souvenir shops, or from random people, at least I can only speak of those in my care. I’ve recently listed a couple of M&M’s souvenir key chains I bought from NYC, and already the items have bidders pushing the price up to double digits. I eventually won’t earn that much out of the transaction, but hey a free MCD meal is always welcomed. So if you’re ever interested in the buy-sell world, it is interesting how things that you consider worthless might cost others something to own. The world of online business is beautiful; once I got into it…

With that said and done, I am all geared up for this year’s Otakon. Who knows what other treasures I might discover next? And for those of you going to NYC, you hella know what to get me now.

Document1,
Vonnie S.

Q: Or a murder of crows perched on the window ledge!

You zit. You sitting so nicely on my forehead. I cannot comprehend why you need to appear despite my better eating habits and constant face washing. You must be here to punish my sleeping behavior. I am sorry but Saki was especially addictive to watch. The episodes call to me because it’s been awhile since I last watch a soft yuri. Genre changes make anime watching very addictive. I am starting on Karneval next. I have just gotten hold of the whole series and will start doing some serious planning to encourage proper rations to anime.

Time to work on shaking the sluggish feeling away. I have to start working on a better self. Drink green tea every day. Wake up early. Be productive and read at least two journal articles each day. Get a song in each month. O hey, I have finally mastered Butterfly! At least I’ve gotten the melody right, not the rhythm yet. Going to work on the older songs before moving onto a new oneHappy Birthday. Not your birthday, but it’ll definitely be for someone. J

Marital status,
Vonnie S.

Q: I need a barking dog outside the window right about now...

I don’t want to behave. School is starting in a week’s time and I am still drunk on holiday mood. I don’t know if I just didn’t want to deal with the stress, or simply because I am just plain lazy. Perhaps they correlate. I don’t know. What I do know is this, if I want to graduate, I have to dive into the books soon. Submerge myself in knowledge, catch the fishes on my own and remember to surface for breaths of air for another year.

How tall am I? I am short. I feel short too, especially with all these future responsibilities slowly creeping behind me. The world may be out but it cannot get me. I’ll find a good deep hole and hide inside. Hibernation. My eyes are heavy with sleep. Spring beckons me forth, but I am not pleased.

Crossed arms,
Vonnie S.

Q: You think what, your grandfather own this place ah?

I am sitting inside my favorite bookstore observing a bunch of American teenagers talking. They are a loud bunch. No hint of decency and care of anyone else outside their circle of friends. A girl sits on her boys’ lap. Another kid is showing off things on his phone to them. In between these people sat two cups of coffee, a bag of chips and some artificially sweeten drink. O gosh, the two are now taking a selfie with that cup of coffee. People, if your purpose of a bookstore visit does not include reading, buying books, or doing some important work on your laptop, DON’T ruin the place for others who have that in mind.

I’m sorry. It is fortunate for you that you’ll “be stuck here till 2.30pm with nothing to do.” I have to work dammit. On this paper, on more paper, and perhaps get to that batch of journals as well.

Fifteen minutes in and they’re still talking about selfies. Make good use of your time kids.

Goodie bag,
Vonnie S.

Q: Please. Kangkung is the most widely used substance in an average Malaysian lives.

What country’s government uses a vegetable to justify that they’ve done a good job with mediating price hikes?

Q: Shall continue work in the morning.

If you’re a fan of the American Idol, things can get pretty repetitive after a decade of this franchise. Despite the changes in the judging panel, I will skip out on it this year. There was a need in me for a foreign taste; hence I have decided to follow Kpop Star 3. While I started on this tiny journey beginning on episode six, I’m curious as to what will happen in future. The show stood out for several reasons; first, the participants’ diversity (in terms of set numbers and relatable nationalities), high quality judging (feedbacks that are helpful rather than just “you suck”), and the dynamic display of music (regardless of talent range and style).

If you like JYP, then this is the show for you. Guess that’s the only Korean star I know of the show. Guess I have decided to do the Korean Wave for a bit. This will be a great bit for study time with the tv.

Chocolate cake,
Vonnie S.

Q: Oh you like that huh?

I’ll be home for some spinach and rice. My roommate goes bonkers with foods; one day healthy diet vegetarian-ish and on other day, heavy full throttle food-coma inducing menu. I hate to put down her cooking because it is not every day that you get to indulge in Indian food, but certain effects are showing on this Oriental. Pimples, for instance, were bigger than usual. I am not going to go all details on it. The smell of my place has definitely changed drastically. The lavender potpourris put up a poor fight against the turmeric and cardamoms. On most days, people thought that I’ve been visiting Indian restaurants for lunches. Sweet cheeks, no Indian restaurants until summer rolls around okay?

Well-being,
Vonnie S.

Q: Chih chih, I thought Muslims were Pakistanis.

I thought about you today. I may never cross your mind off late, but that’s okay. You were my close friend. I used ‘were’ because our relationship today will not reflect my definition of a close friend relationship. We became apart, first physically, then slowly emotionally. The distance formed a void that no one bothered to fill.
Some friendships dissolve just like that for no apparent reason. Like that one orange Airborne pill, it disappears when in contact with water. No one tried to keep in touch, and no one cared to question why. Eventually, I stopped talking about you. I guess we hardly meet our friends who know us. Even so, I doubt I would ever talk about you then.
I am not saying that it’s your fault. If it is, I am equally worth the blame. Perhaps I’ve lost interest, or had better things to do. We’ve simply moved to greener pastures, places that held such importance to us and our futures. In this lifetime, our hunger for success is driven by social expectations. None choose to remain their old selves; let it be a memory of what once was, one of naivety and impulsion. We were loud, selfish fools.
I believe the air will stale with awkwardness when we meet again. The only way to clear it is to be ‘adults’. We’ll talk, yet we both know it’s no longer the same. We’ll shake on it, and sweep the ill feelings under the rug at least away from other friends’ sights. At least I am glad that we’ve graced each other’s life once upon a time.
Pretty love,
Vonnie S.

Pillow Talk: My Third Roommate

Funny story. She was referred to me by a friend. I wasn’t expecting the move-in date to be the very next day. But she was desperate (at least she sounded so to me on the phone), and of all days it had to be final’s week. Well, I am rarely the type who says no. I had no idea who she was except that she’s from India and a medical student.
Five things I about ShravaniN and what I learned:
1) Hang Up the Dang Phone Already!
- I have NEVER in my life met someone who spends a good 60% of their wake time talking on the phone. Alright, I may be exaggerating on ‘wake time’ but the data is real if it’s based on the hours she spends with me. Yes, I did my observation homework. Think I’m just being whiny, eh? Well, you should try turning on the radio to a foreign language channel (say Russian) and have it talk your ears off. I don’t know if it’s because I have yet to get use to staying with someone after all the alone time during the past year and a half, or that it’s the shared space (meaning that if we were to live inside a two bedroom apartment, chances are I would have not been this bothered by her phone chats).
Lesson learned: Always, always take your phone conversations elsewhere. Be sensitive to those around you.
2) Near Zero Street Smarts
- She has the brains of a medical student alright. You should have seen her telling me about eating right and staying healthy. That aside, she’s completely hopeless when it comes to dealing with decisions and living matters. My grocery shopping time has increased by 30 minutes because she can never decide what brand of bread to buy or how many onions to get. Oh yes, since her arrival, I have close to ten items burnt because she doesn’t observe the stove. I le gasped at one point when she asked me “why is everything in this house plastic?” No, not everything is plastic and yet you burn them anyway.
Lesson learned: Nothing really, if anything it’s all about patience testing.

Pillow Talk: My Third Roommate (Part II)

3) One Minute A, Next Minute B
- Capricious and downright fickle-minded. Trust on me when I say that she changes her mind every minute or so. For example, we have decided one morning that she will not cook for the day. I’ve triple checked with her before heading to the Farmer’s Market. She watched me buy my food, and yet said nothing. But she bought fresh mutton, only to then decide that she’ll cook lunch when we get back home. I swt because I had in my hands lentil soup and fresh vege wraps.
Lesson learned: The only way you deal with unpredictable weather is to never trust the forecast.
4) Stick to the Kitchen
- Awesome cook! She has made so many South Indian cuisines that I simply made her the designated cook. This decision saves me time and money anyway, hence I won’t ever complain about having to do the dishes. From curries to dhals, chapatis and kacang putih-like snacks, you’ll have to get her to name these dishes! All that’s important to me is that those things make my taste buds dance. Definitely beats any of the Indian cuisine places here in Baltimore. They got nothing on her.
Lesson learned: Eat, Praise, Love.
5) Indian Ambassador
- She’s a proud Indian. It is especially telling when she talks about arrange marriages, the caste system and Bollywood. She tries really hard to make me like Indian culture; from the food (refer to point 4), to the music, movies and even the language. While my love for all things Japanese remained strong, I have gained a sense of respect for South India. If only she stopped looping her favorite songs…
Lesson learned: Tolerance and respect is key to a peaceful world.
Into it,
Vonnie S.

Pillow Talk: My Second Roommate

She came in to replace ST. Thanks to Amira’s recommendation; we ended up sharing the same apartment. Unlike ST, KaviS left a pretty sensational impression, one befitting that of an innocent schoolgirl. Except that she was anything but innocent.
Five things about KaviS and what I learned from her:
1) Drunken Master
- She loves to drink. What’s a box of 24 beer bottles? That’s gonna disappear within a week tops. Girl downs them alcohol like water, but still sober enough to do her calculus. I heard that she found some drinking buddies after I left Michigan. That mischievous eighteen year old should not even be drinking in the first place. US has a law against minor drinking alcohol, right?
Lesson learned: Never leave your beer inside the fridge without calculating them first.
2) Phew, what a potty mouth
- There are only a handful of people I’ve met in my life who swears as well as KaviS does. Forget the punctuation and away with those bombastic vocabularies. It was like Comedy Central life whenever PJ and her spar in sarcasm. I swear you can watch them all day. A beautiful thing to do is to open up the house for other people to join in the fun with popcorn in tow.
Lesson learned: What may seem cool is often a bad habit best left unlearned.

Pillow Talk: My Second Roommate (Part II)

3) From Sri Lanka
- She made that clear whenever we call her an “Indian girl”. Park you.
Lesson learned: A Sri Lankan is not an Indian; unless you’re an American.
4) One Hot Mama
- Breakfast, lunch, and dinner shared the same menu: chili padi and rice. No kidding. The girl can engulf spicy dishes without leaving a drop of sweat. RyanA brought her to Buffalo Wild Wings to try out the Wall of Flame challenge. She completed that shit in no time. Guess what? Most of us take breaks because of the heat; she took breaks because her stomach was getting full. Lol
Lesson learned: Make full use of your friends’ talents. (Not being an opportunist here.)
5) A Wolf in Sheep’s Clothing
- I don’t mean that she cons people with her innocence. Wait…actually that’s exactly what she does well. Know her long enough and those wool sheds to reveal a foxy, potty mouth child. I always wonder if her parents ever knew her other self. I remembered her dad telling me that “she doesn’t drink or party,” and yet I scratched my head on some days thinking that I’ve taken in a different person.
Lesson learned: Never judge a book by its cover (unless it features horses).
Color me,

Pillow Talk: My First Roommate

After 24 years of living on planet earth, I have only cohabited with three human beings. Well, I am still living with one of them and she’s an amazeballs! Okay, before you start scratching me for this unruly slang I spewed (because I imagine you have very sharp claws), allow me to talk about my experiences. Disclaimer: I do acknowledge different viewpoints when it involves methods on how to effectively deal with a fellow human, so this post will take the entertainment path. If you somehow learned anything from these subsequent rants, that’s good. Your parents’ hard earned money is well spent.
If you were ever talking to me from years late 2007 till present, I can almost guarantee you that stories regarding my first roommate would surface somewhere or rather. Many of you took them lightly, laughing at her fails and emotional rides, but some of you, not so much.
Five things about ST and what I learned from her:

1) Emo Kid
- A nickname that she earned during her stay in Michigan. Emo refers to the multiple bouts of bipolar behaviors she exhibited that were mostly for self-centered reasons. We don’t mean that she wears gothic clothing or play hard metal music, but rather the unbearable emotional rollercoaster that took us, her friends by storm. It hits harder than the -30 Celsius snow blizzard because while we still remained unchanged after the natural disaster, the aftermath of an ST drama (back then) sent people packing and left relationships changed forever.
Lesson learned: People may not necessarily ever recover from their past history. Be patient, but also know when to back off, especially when things prove too much to handle.
2) Attention-fueled
- Knowing this can both harm and benefit; you will have to conduct yourself appropriately to ensure that nothing triggers the violent urge to press you for it. But I have to admit this, she met her goal of becoming the talk of town, at least it’s so within the Asian community then. Whether that reputation proved to be more damaging than helping, you may refer to point 3.
Lesson learned: Reward for good behavior; withhold for bad behavior. Toleration for the most part is your best armor.

Pillow Talk: My First Roommate (Part II)

3) The Best Gossip Magazine In Town!
- Forget your monthly write-up. If you’re subscribed on ST’s friend list, you’ll get a whiff of the news within the day of incident itself. She’ll deliver the story to you in person, usually over dinner, and talk about how the world is out to get her. If you’re ever in the mood for reality show, this is the channel for you. Entertainment value is guaranteed high, validity, on the other hand, needs to be questioned frequently.
Lesson learned: Don’t let anything into her eyes or ears. Period.
4) Dishwashing Pro
- If there’s anything I’d give ST credit for, it’s her love for clean environment. She enjoys putting your winter coat back into the closet, arranging the shoes evenly, and emptying the sink of dirty dishes. Those qualities are rare in college students, so that’s definitely one thing I highly recommend her to promote when it comes to meeting a potential mate.
Lesson learned: Arighty, time to take out the trash.
5) Drama Queen
- I am sure we can agree that a person with the combination of point 1 and 2 can evolve into a scary persona. Hence, the drama queen. But hey, with pun intended, ST loves watching Hong Kong television drama series. She gets hooked on to them so much that she had burnt a number of eggs. Yes, they sat in the pan while she watched Moses strutted around in an emperor outfit.
Lesson learned: Finish the egg, and then only go to laptop.
In the end, we’ve mutually decided to part ways. She moved to a studio apartment away from school (and me). Peace finally returned to Lafayette village that Summer. Ah, so sweet the taste of freedom.
Big taste,
Vonnie S.

Q: Why I do not hate Kaga Kouko-san…

 1) Banri's her first boyfriend.
- aka it's her first experience with relationship.
I would go as far to say that it's pretty normal for girls to behave a lil possessive in the beginning stage of love esp if they really love the guy.

2) Trust level not strong enough yet.
- They are still on freaking last name basis.
The fact that Linda is calling Banri by first name should like set the jealousy flag up anytime ok? For example, say your girlfriend has a nickname for another guy who she's pretty comfortable with. If you have no feel for it initially, something is definitely up with you man.

3) Banri LIED.
- Blasphemy behold that she had to learn the truth via eavesdropping of all things.
Damn, it's like overhearing someone freaking thrashed you behind doors with someone else. I'd honestly think he should have come clean with it esp since Kouko became his girlfriend.

4) The return of the "EX"
- Technically, Linda ain't the ex. But it's a love rival.
If Kouko don't behave possessively, there's a chance that Banri will be taken away. By all means, she has to get some "reassurance" that it won't happen.
5) Kouko is not omniscient. - We as viewers get to seethe whole story. But she doesn't. So if you start viewing things from her point of view, you'll see some pretty shady stuff. Like Banri's behavior toward Linda, and on top of that knowing that he once liked Linda. That's pretty unsettling if you know your partner once liked another guy friend and that friend is still close with you and her (le gasp!).
6) Kouko is most likely just a socially awkward person.
Ain't some S*** members are like that to a certain degree, esp so when one doesn't have that many friends to help nurture good communication skills?
Then the writers made her character flawed on purpose. Cos let's face it. If she's perfect in every way, there won't be an interesting story line. Haha! I have a bone to pick with Linda too. But I'll stop, since I have to work on this paper!
-----------------------------------------------------
Say, I must be drunk the night I wrote this bullet point of an argument. I understand that this post wouldn’t make much sense to you, unless you’re watching Golden Time, but I’ll put it up anyway because it is a great material for people who disses on the protagonist. Thank you, DavionT for starting me on this writing spree.
Gosh,
Vonnie S.
