Q: We should spend new years in group video chat of 20 people. Just saying. :D

Yesterday night I lay around after reviewing six chapters on learning. I wasn't doing anything, simply enjoying the evening on my back, staring at the ceiling. I never realized there were two detectors on my wall until then; my guess is one signals smoke and the other for carbon monoxide. The feeling of having a support to my back was great, quite the contrary, the prickly sensation that tormented me for the past eight hours was simply no joke. And there I positioned myself as though I was ready for bed, surrendering to gravity and the sound of the passing storm. The worst was over.

Sandy is a brat. She uprooted trees and buildings while the rest of us watch helplessly from the shelter. She tore Ocean City, a pier that I've heard so much about and yet not been there. She closed schools and offices for two days, the delay brought an additional week into our semester schedule. She left hundreds of thousands in the dark. There is so much bad to this hurricane on the news and I have to agree, she was an inevitable, cumbersome pain. Now that she's moved on to other parts, life in Maryland can press the "play" button tomorrow. The storm left many in pieces, but she left me with a truth. In a weird sense, I am at peace with myself and others.

Thank you especially to Lihee and MelC for keeping me positive through the ordeal.
Thank you to the rest of you who called, wrote, or texted as well. International or local, you people gave me the reason to believe in humanity!

Why weren't we?

Q: What's on your mind?

Credits to fly10 (c) Fluffy
Are you blind to the most basic truth,
Or do you care for only you?
I could go on, but you've heard this before,
So tell me why you do nothing anymore?Am I a lost case, or just a nut case?
Are you concerned, or is your heart burned?
Could you help me, would you try,
Or am I just another left to die?

Whatever your options may be, I'd probably do well not knowing.

Q: Woah, imagine if I really did went to New England instead. I would have to evacuate!

Wooo, listen to that wind pounding against my window. Sandy's mad that I'm caving into procrastination once more, then again, she might actually be mad I'm relishing on pizza for dinner. Both very unhealthy habits for a grad student, but what the heck. Being infinitesimally prepared for class is not a good reinforcer to begin with. Alright, I'm staying up to welcome Sandy anyway, so why is she mad again? Right...probably it's her boyfriend, New York. I heard he had a fling with Irene last year.

Baltimoreans are not afraid of hurricane for I still see vehicles moving on the damp road outside. So much for taking precautions and staying indoors. I suppose this anticipating game is waning on some of them city folks. I could be wrong tho. I mean, procrastinators like myself could be on that road or barely finding a good parking spot at Walmart to buy bottles of water and food. Also, the elevator of my apartment is still ring-a-ding-ding-ing. So that kinda explains a lot about the current situation. The temperature in my room has taken a dive into icy waters, prompting layers on me just to stay warm. Reality hits you like a slap on the face they say, this storm delayed me a impending midterm as my campus closes tomorrow.

I called mom to tell her about Sandy. She didn't sound too pleased that her daughter (who should be peacefully studying at a safe place) had to go through with this. Three minutes, and she was over it. Of course, I had to play down my cards. Freaking her out will bring no benefit. It would be like freaking myself out a million times more. Anyway, I really should stop typing and go sit by the window to hear Sandy's footsteps inching closer and closer to Maryland shore.

Godzilla-like,

Q: Of course, like I don't already know.

And that was it, in that moment I wasn't angry anymore. I could see we weren't meant to be together. Guys, you think your only choices are to swallow your anger or throw it in someone's face. But there’s a third option, you can just let it go. And only when you do that is it really gone, and you can move forward.

For a living planet,

Q: This speaks to me alot...

Hurricane Sandy is still making her way to Baltimore as I am struggling at completing my presentation. Now that I've managed half way through my slides, I don't even have the slightest motivation to finish this thing. It's due the coming Tuesday and I have yet to study for my Monday midterm, all in all eleven long chapters. While I am still very hopeful for class to be canceled on Monday, I figured my chances seem bleak at the moment. There is hardly any news about the hurricane watch from my professors. Suddenly it felt like they're going to just plow through with this wretched weather and I may simply have to pull an all-nighter to get these studying done. Then again, better prepare earlier than later. But heck, if I knew that I am not being productive tonight, I could have gone out for a stroll around the neighborhood. What a mood kill.

And I don't know what's up with me lately. I have been sleeping more frequently than usual. Oh boy, there goes another yawn again.

Fed down,
Vonnie S.

Q: Hurricane Sandy over the weekends? Good, more sleep for me then!

Yup. One heck of a storm is launching itself inland to Baltimore. I heard it from the mail lady that powers are going to be down for days if the impact is severe. Which brings me to my next point, should I buy more food to stock up just in case it really does happen? On one hand, it will be a great experience. Witnessing a passing hurricane is not a leisure activity one gets to do everyday. Of course, this storm will bring with it rain and strong winds, worst of them all, destruction. Thus, that would not only jeopardize my studies and presentation due the following week, it will also make travelling to the institute hazardous for good reasons.

Anyway, I am hoping and finger crossing that Sandy will go tame on Baltimore. The only reason she's mad is because of the fluctuating temperature and pressure that come with the season's change. Why, it is but only a natural cycle year in and out. She should understand that I am too busy right now to be playing on her whims. But like I've learned about non-verbal subjects (Sandy's non-living to boot) over the years, it's a challenge to get your ideas across. So I might have to just brace the storm next week.

What an asshole. As a friend, you should have known better than to say "oh." Was it really that time consuming to write a decent greeting? And you wonder why you never hit the jackpot. Please, that's why I'm so done with some of you suckers. Apparently my existence is not worth your time, and frankly speaking I can't find anymore reason to justify for you to use my time either. So the next time you come round looking for me, expect to see a "You can Suck It" sign on my door.

Stormtroopering this Halloween,
Vonnie S.

Q: Take a leaf out of this guy's book, it will change you.

Below is the transcript of the talk of Dr. Richard Teo, who is a 40-year-old millionaire and cosmetic surgeon with a stage-4 lung cancer but selflessly
came to share with the D1 class his life experience on 19-Jan-2012.

Hi good morning to all of you. My voice is a bit hoarse, so please bear with me. I thought I'll just introduce myself. My name is Richard, I'm a medical doctor. And I thought I'll
just share some thoughts of my life. It's my pleasure to be invited by prof. Hopefully, it can get you thinking about how... as you pursue this.. embarking on your training to become dental surgeons, to think about other things as well.

Since young, I am a typical product of today's society. Relatively successful product that society requires.. From young, I came from a below average family. I was told by the media... and people around me that happiness is about success. And that success is about being wealthy. With this mind-set, I've always be extremely competitive, since I was young.

Not only do I need to go to the top school, I need to have success in all fields. Uniform groups, track, everything. I needed to get trophies, needed to be successful, I needed to have colours award, national colours award, everything. So I was highly competitive since young. I went on to medical school, graduated as a doctor. Some of you may know that within the medical faculty, ophthalmology is one of the most highly sought after specialities. So I went after that as well. I was given a traineeship in ophthalmology, I was also given a research scholarship by NUS to develop lasers to treat the eye.

So in the process, I was given 2 patents, one for the medical devices, and another for the lasers. And you know what, all this academic achievements did not bring me any wealth. So once I completed my bond with MOH, I decided that this is taking too long, the training in eye surgery is just taking too long. And there's lots of money to be made in the private sector. If you're aware, in the last few years, there is this rise in aesthetic medicine. Tons of money to be made there. So I decided, well, enough of staying in institution, it's time to leave. So I quit my training halfway and I went on to set up my aesthetic clinic... in town, together with a day surgery centre.

You know the irony is that people do not make heroes out average GP (general practitioner), family physicians. They don't. They make heroes out of people who are rich and famous. People who are not happy to pay $20 to see a GP, the same person have no qualms paying ten thousand dollars for a liposuction, 15 thousand dollars for a breast augmentation, and so on and so forth. So it's a no brainer isn't? Why do you want to be a gp? Become an aesthetic physician. So instead of healing the sick and ill, I decided that I'll become a glorified beautician. So, business was good, very good. It started off with waiting of one week, then became 3weeks, then one month, then 2 months, then 3 months. I was overwhelmed; there were just too many patients. Vanities are fantastic business. I employed one doctor, the second doctor, the 3rd doctor, the 4th doctor. And within the 1st year, we're already raking in millions. Just the 1st year. But never is enough because I was so obsessed with it. I started to expand into Indonesia to get all the rich Indonesian tai-tais who wouldn't blink an eye to have a procedure done. So life was really good.

So what do I do with the spare cash. How do I spend my weekends? Typically, I'll have car club gatherings. I take out my track car, with spare cash I got myself a track car. We have car club gatherings. We'll go up to Sepang in Malaysia. We'll go for car racing. And it was my life. With other spare cash, what do i do? I get myself a Ferrari. At that time, the 458 wasn't out, it's just a spider convertible, 430. This is a friend of mine, a schoolmate who is a forex trader, a banker. So he got a red one, he was wanting all along a red one, I was getting the silver one.

So what do I do after getting a car? It's time to buy a house, to build our own bungalows. So we go around looking for a land to build our own bungalows, we went around hunting. So how do i live my life? Well, we all think we have to mix around with the rich and famous. This is one of the Miss Universe. So we hang around with the beautiful, rich and famous. This by the way is an internet founder. So this is how we spend our lives, with dining and all the restaurants and Michelin Chefs you know.

So I reach a point in life that I got everything for my life. I was at the pinnacle of my career and all. That's me one year ago in the gym and I thought I was like, having everything under control and reaching the pinnacle.

Well, I was wrong. I didn't have everything under control. About last year March, I started to develop backache in the middle of nowhere. I thought maybe it was all the heavy squats I was doing. So I went to SGH, saw my classmate to do an MRI, to make sure it's not a slipped disc or anything. And that evening, he called me up and said that we found bone marrow replacement in your spine. I said, sorry what does that mean? I mean I know what it means, but I couldn't accept that. I was like “Are you serious?” I was still running around going to the gym you know. But we had more scans the next day, PET scans - positrons emission scans, they found that actually I have stage 4 terminal lung cancer. I was like "Whoa where did that come from?” It has already spread to the brain, the spine, the liver and the adrenals. And you know one moment I was there, totally thinking that I have everything under control, thinking that I've reached the pinnacle of my life. But the next moment, I have just lost it.

This is a CT scan of the lungs itself. If you look at it, every single dot there is a tumour. We call this miliaries tumour. And in fact, I have tens of thousands of them in the lungs. So, I was told that even with chemotherapy, that I'll have about 3-4months at most. Did my life come crushing on, of course it did, who wouldn't? I went into depression, of course, severe depression and I thought I had everything.

See the irony is that all these things that I have, the success, the trophies, my cars, my house and all. I thought that brought me happiness. But i was feeling really down, having severe depression. Having all these thoughts of my possessions, they brought me no joy. The thought of... You know, I can hug my Ferrari to sleep, no... No, it is not going to happen. It brought not a single comfort during my last ten months. And I thought they were, but they were not true happiness. But it wasn't. What really brought me joy in the last ten months was interaction with people, my loved ones, friends, people who genuinely care about me, they laugh and cry with me, and they are able to identify the pain and suffering I was going through. That brought joy to me, happiness. None of the things I have, all the possessions, and I thought those were supposed to bring me happiness. But it didn't, because if it did, I would have felt happy think about it, when I was feeling most down..

You know the classical Chinese New Year that is coming up. In the past, what do I do? Well, I will usually drive my flashy car to do my rounds, visit my relatives, to show it off to my friends. And I thought that was joy, you know. I thought that was really joy. But do you really think that my relatives and friends, whom some of them have difficulty trying to make ends meet, that will truly share the joy with me? Seeing me driving my flashy car and showing off to them? No, no way. They won’t be sharing joy with me. They were having problems trying to make ends meet, taking public transport. In fact i think, what I have done is more like you know, making them envious, jealous of all I have. In fact, sometimes even hatred.

Those are what we call objects of envy. I have them, I show them off to them and I feel it can fill my own pride and ego. That didn't bring any joy to these people, to my friends and relatives, and I thought they were real joy.

Well, let me just share another story with you. You know when I was about your age, I stayed in king Edward VII hall. I had this friend whom I thought was strange. Her name is Jennifer, we're still good friends. And as I walk along the path, she would, if she sees a snail, she would actually pick up the snail and put it along the grass patch. I was like why do you need to do that? Why dirty your hands? It’s just a snail. The truth is she could feel for the snail. The thought of being crushed to death is real to her, but to me it's just a snail. If you can't get out of the pathway of humans then you deserve to be crushed, it’s part of evolution isn't it? What an irony isn't it?

There I was being trained as a doctor, to be compassionate, to be able to empathise; but I couldn't. As a house officer, I graduated from medical school, posted to the oncology department at NUH. And, every day, every other day I witness death in the cancer department. When I see how they suffered, I see all the pain they went through. I see all the morphine they have to press every few minutes just to relieve their pain. I see them struggling with their oxygen breathing their last breath and all. But it was just a job. When I went to clinic every day, to the wards every day, take blood, give the medication but was the patient real to me? They weren't real to me. It was just a job, I do it, I get out of the ward, I can't wait to get home, I do my own stuff.

Was the pain, was the suffering the patients went through real? No. Of course I know all the medical terms to describe how they feel, all the suffering they went through. But in truth, I did not know how they feel, not until I became a patient. It is until now; I truly understand how they feel. And, if you ask me, would I have been a very different doctor if I were to re-live my life now, I can tell you yes I will. Because I truly understand how the patients feel now. And sometimes, you have to learn it the hard way.

Even as you start just your first year, and you embark this journey to become dental surgeons, let me just challenge you on two fronts.

Inevitably, all of you here will start to go into private practice. You will start to accumulate wealth. I can guarantee you. Just doing an implant can bring you thousands of dollars, it's fantastic money. And actually there is nothing wrong with being successful, with being rich or wealthy, absolutely nothing wrong. The only trouble is that a lot of us like myself couldn't handle it.

Why do I say that? Because when I start to accumulate, the more I have, the more I want. The more I wanted, the more obsessed I became. Like what I showed you earlier on, all I can was basically to get more possessions, to reach the pinnacle of what society did to us, of what society wants us to be. I became so obsessed that nothing else really mattered to me. Patients were just a source of income, and I tried to squeeze every single cent out of these patients.

A lot of times we forget, whom we are supposed to be serving. We become so lost that we serve nobody else but just ourselves. That was what happened to me. Whether it is in the medical, the dental fraternity, I can tell you, right now in the private practice, sometimes we just advise patients on treatment that is not indicated. Grey areas. And even though it is not necessary, we kind of advocate it. Even at this point, I know who are my friends and who genuinely cared for me and who are the ones who try to make money out of me by selling me "hope". We kind of lose our moral compass along the way. Because we just want to make money.

Worse, I can tell you, over the last few years, we bad mouth our fellow colleagues, our fellow competitors in the industry. We have no qualms about it. So if we can put them down to give ourselves an advantage, we do it. And that's what happening right now, medical, dental everywhere. My challenge to you is not to lose that moral compass. I learnt it the hard way, I hope you don't ever have to do it.

Secondly, a lot of us will start to get numb to our patients as we start to practise. Whether is it government hospitals, private practice, I can tell you when I was in the hospital, with stacks of patient folders, I can't wait to get rid of those folders as soon as possible; I can't wait to get patients out of my consultation room as soon as possible because there is just so many, and that's a reality. Because it becomes a job, a very routine job. And this is just part of it. Do I truly know how the patient feels back then? No, I don't. The fears and anxiety and all, do I truly understand what they are going through? I don't, not until when this happens to me and I think that is one of the biggest flaws in our system.

We’re being trained to be healthcare providers, professional, and all and yet we don't know how exactly they feel. I'm not asking you to get involved emotionally, I don't think that is professional but do we actually make a real effort to understand their pain and all? Most of us won’t, alright, I can assure you. So don't lose it, my challenge to you is to always be able to put yourself in your patient's shoes.

Because the pain, the anxiety, the fear are very real even though it's not real to you, it's real to them. So don't lose it and you know, right now I'm in the midst of my 5th cycle of my chemotherapy. I can tell you it’s a terrible feeling. Chemotherapy is one of those things that you don't wish even your enemies to go through because it's just suffering, lousy feeling, throwing out, you don't even know if you can retain your meals or not. Terrible feeling! And even with whatever little energy now I have, I try to reach out to other cancer patients because I truly understand what pain and suffering is like. But it's kind of little too late and too little.

You guys have a bright future ahead of you with all the resource and energy, so I’m going to challenge you to go beyond your immediate patients. To understand that there are people out there who are truly in pain, truly in hardship. Don’t get the idea that only poor people suffer. It is not true. A lot of these poor people do not have much in the first place, they are easily contented. for all you know they are happier than you and me but there are out there, people who are suffering mentally, physically, hardship, emotionally, financially and so on and so forth, and they are real. We choose to ignore them or we just don't want to know that they exist.

So do think about it alright, even as you go on to become professionals and dental surgeons and all. That you can reach out to these people who are in need. Whatever you do can make a large difference to them. I'm now at the receiving end so I know how it feels, someone who genuinely care for you, encourage and all. It makes a lot of difference to me. That’s what happens after treatment. I had a treatment recently, but I’ll leave this for another day. A lot of things happened along the way, that's why I am still able to talk to you today.

I'll just end of with this quote here, it's from this book called Tuesdays with Morris, and some of you may have read it. Everyone knows that they are going to die; every one of us knows that. The truth is, none of us believe it because if we did, we will do things differently. When I faced death, when I had to, I stripped myself off all stuff totally and I focused only on what is essential. The irony is that a lot of times, only when we learn how to die then we learn how to live. I know it sounds very morbid for this morning but it's the truth, this is what I’m going through.

Don’t let society tell you how to live. Don’t let the media tell you what you're supposed to do. Those things happened to me. And I led this life thinking that these are going to bring me happiness. I hope that you will think about it and decide for yourself how you want to live your own life. Not according to what other people tell you to do, and you have to decide whether you want to serve yourself, whether you are going to make a difference in somebody else's life. Because true happiness doesn't come from serving yourself. I thought it was but it didn't turn out that way. With that I thank you, if you have any questions you have for me, please feel free. Thank you.

Q: So I'll write: I could do that if I tried hard.

Credits to adrianismyname (c) The artist
Holy crap. That's all you need to know about me today. Apart from buying a bucket of fried chicken  (should you need to know what my week's dinner menu looks like), I indulged in fruit smoothies for lunches three days in a row now. I am guilty as charged. Being on polar opposites are the food I intake, and I am very much wanting October to come to an end. Those colorful fiery trees I mentioned made this place looks like Hell already.

Q: True friends are never apart, maybe in distance, but not in heart.

I have double reasons to shower today; one, for the fact that it is a daily routine I religiously do after coming home from work, and two, I just saw my kid humping the floor. There I was with my primary therapist behind the one-way mirror staring at this 220 pound 11 year old committing an inappropriate act during session. How angry LizC was, I can only guess but boy, the one session therapist in that blue treatment room was not at all pleased. She rolled her eyes and kept on chugging ahead with those demand materials, while deep down inside I knew she wished time would fly faster. "Smells weird in there..." was all RebG said as soon as session ended.

With the changing of teams, I met new people and they are nice as heck. Of course, there is always that rumor in and out of the unit about this one Asian girl from Indonesia (yes, I believe despite the correction, people still think I came from China or other countries I won't even begin considering as part of my origins). Anyway, I am about to witness my first child getting discharged from the inpatient unit. He's due the Monday after Thanksgiving and I am excited for him. Good thing I have the day off again tomorrow to sort out my presentation for Tuesday. (Omg, sooo not looking forward to it.)

Just bought Ika an ice cream voucher via Groupon for her birthday. Since I can't provide her an actual physical gift, this I believe would put a smile on this sweet tooth friend of mine. Perhaps it's a lil too early to pass on the present, but I also happens to trust in being early than late.

So......

Q: Each time mittens says nuclear weapons take a drink.

Mm...hmm, watching the debate while reading a chapter on shaping and eating instant noodle. Multi-tasking achievement unlocked! Honest opinion, these two don't have the perfect solution to the problems of this nation. But for the record of where the scale's tipping at, I'd say Obama's got this debate hands down.

Please don't drag China into this. I don't think they want to be involved ever. They will laugh at your idea about "playing by the rules". Pfft, what about foreign policy? Bah!

It's all about stability,

Q: WHITE SCREEN OF DEATH,ARRRRRRRRRRR

and he sold me some tongkat ali. Who am I kidding? Anyone who watched HIMYM would remember this scene, at least I did because Barney mentioned Malaysia and then Robin Sparkle's Let's Go to the Mall music video played right after. Anyway, gotta get going with my readings. Ain't finished with them yet!

Q: Don't think think think, just DO IT!

As this one loose screw on the chair continuously harass my jeans, I will document this happy day on a note that promises not one bit productivity on the academic side, but a whole lot of travelling hours spent on the bus. Strictly speaking, the day began with a one hour ride to my campus. My cellphone chose this very day to fail on me, and very successfully it did to shake a rather sleepy me. Anyway, HJ was patient, sitting prettily at the bus stop while I on the other hand, suffered apologetic facial expressions I can never conjure unless I am in that sorry state. She made me pick between sugar cane or chrysanthemum tea. Which did you think ended in my bag? Go!

On the way there, she made me hold her hands. Her reasoning faulted the fall winds, its dry bitter touch that dehydrated her skin, thus resulting in a cut on the back of her palm. I did't blame her, even I enjoy sandwiching my palms against the side of my cheeks on a cold day. Unfortunately I was most certain my hands had seen better days, now stretched from the lack of moisture, it begged for a layer of lotion (I made another sorry face for I had none on). "So stress, just thinking about tomorrow." I couldn't agree more.

Seton Radiology Center is within proximity of the Saint Agnes Hospital. We were to have our chest scanned against our will, for our PPD tests came back positive and I have but little bright thoughts to slitter away from this "standard" procedure. I liked this hospital though. I will say so because of the particularly fast service, how straight-forward the system works and for an instance, the place had me experience a flashback to one particular corn maze in Michigan. Crazy huh?

After a series of interrogation personal questions, we need not wait long before a nurse appeared to slaughter our names to an audience of old folks. "Ji-when sing. Lim-hue-gin." I swear... I can tell you this. Xray is not the most comfortable thing in the world. You are butt naked (well, we needed to remove only our tops), with nothing but a gown separating your skin from being in contact with the hospital air. As awkward as it sounded, the session swiftly met its closure as we walked out happy as children on sugar. Got back to campus and had True Grits Friday specials for lunch with SoraK.

Then, I was alone with Chai. We talked for a good two hours on nothing but relationships. Yup.

My journey home included a stop at the Dollar Tree (to pick up on some cards, one chopping board and ziplock bags), Godiva boutique (to collect my one free chocolate raspberry truffle) and Corner Cafe (to have a free bacon mac and cheese for dinner). Guess who was at my door upon home? The cute Hopkins boy. And uh-huh, today is a happy day indeed.

Nike fan?

Q: My works are trees which continue to branch...

Woohoo! Target sent me samplers of Unilever products today. I just so happen to run out of those goodies too, so that one box saved me the trip to Giant. Anyway, a cute Hopkins engineering grad student dropped by to pick up the microwave oven. Yesterday tak jadi and we rescheduled because of the pouring rain. He just came in from China and needed help with furnishing his room. LekP would be so pleased to know I found a potential buyer! It's just a matter of time till I bridge the two together.

Anyway, I had but a bad stomachache today too, so I took a day off from work. Glad I didn't have to wake early. Staying in my jammies all day kind of took the pain away too. What about the readings? I never got to it. Will probably do it tonight once I'm done making the items checklist. LekP sounded excited already. Me too, onward long weekend!

Q: I pictured a portable mattress would be bigger...

I have a guest coming by to pick up the micro oven I advertised on Craigslist two days ago. The thing is, I bought that thing for $20 from the same lady I bought my toaster from (quite sadly, I suffered a minor depreciation from selling that toaster). Anyway, I’ll be earning an extra $5 from this sale. Oh no, you didn't  Come on, it’s not like I pointed a gun at her face to force the purchase. Besides, I could use a Subway sandwich this week since I've been cooking for days on end.

Anyway, I took another day off from work. I wanted to use the day to finish up on my readings. Let’s see if it is successful. I don’t ever doubt myself, in fact I know better than to even be reassured of a distraction free study session. Also, I got swapped to another team this week; so I've got two boys tucked under my wings now. Honestly tho, I was excited to work with LizC because I know she really gasak her team members nicely and it is evident that a lot of them became really skilled at handling SIB kids. The real shocker was ShariP, who was upset the entire Monday from not having me on the team anymore (more like we can’t mess around with one another anymore). Technically, we’ll still share the same unit floor missy, so don’t you pluck your feathers at this.

Of course, there are bigger things to worry about. One XRAY this Friday, two presentations and two midterms in two weeks’ time! Stupendously horrifying!

Acknowledge yo,
Vonnie S.

Q: Remember, there IS a test coming up.

Sold the Sunbeam toaster I bought for $2. I originally got it off a lady who sold it to me for $5, but I never had the chance to use it until I found a new one at Walmart for $7. Seeing that I would favor a smaller toaster, it's gotta go. This nice lady in all her pinkness contacted me for it and I was glad to be burdened off one less item. Now just two microwave ovens, that one printer and GPS left to go.

Q: Root beer is my guilty pleasure minus the alcohol.

I am so proud of myself! Your friend here has managed to single-handedly refilled all of her printer's ink! Achievement unlock! I am so excited about this new found skill that every sentence has to end with an exclamation mark! Now back to the books... Boo... What a mood kill.

Wow, watching the live broadcast of Felix doing a free fall from the edge of space. Damn imba punya new world record!

Q: Tak boleh tido punya pasal...

Half a chapter and one article to go. Still behind schedule because of Sword Art Online Episode 14! I keed, twenty minutes shouldn't make much of a lengthy distraction. Well, there’s waking up late, cooking lunch, Youtube and my good friend Facebook. Also, HJ called to drag me out for dinner with the intention of introducing me to another Malaysian. Only info I have of this guy is that he’s an undergraduate at the same university, studying the same major as the both of us are and he’s past quarter a century year old. Hm…makes me a lil curious to know what’s he been doing before being admitted. I heard he’s 21 when he did. HJ seemed excited about him though, I suppose I’ll find out in an hour when they get here. Oh boy, the skies are getting darker already.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
You knew I went out for dinner with HJ and a Malaysian guy, but you didn't know there's a China guy and SoraK too! So turns out Malaysian guy's name is HongKi and Chinaman is Kai. We were supposed to have Malaysian food, but due to the crappy timing, we decided to do Cheesecake Factory. Wait, scratch that since the line was horrendously long. Onward to Hard Rock Cafe then. I had a great time, though the music was loud and I found myself yelling half the time trying to get my thoughts across. Still a good night spent in a car filled with silly retrievers, laughing their tails away.

Cold play?

Q: Gotta love being screwed over.

As we're approaching the weekends, I am left with an important responsibility--to be vigilant and discipline enough to complete my readings before Sunday. That is an arduous task for a procrastinator like myself. I don't usually do things earlier than scheduled, especially when it involves articles and textbooks. But in the light of two upcoming presentations, I am left with no choice. To do it earlier, or risk losing a big chunk of my grade. Either way, they are equally aversive. I am then left with balancing the good consequence. So, doing them earlier outweighs everything else.

Here we go again,

Q: The only thing I can give is this song...

Today, a child reminded me why I designated myself this mission. Often times I had wondered and questioned my choices, especially on days when things seemed to get a tad bit overwhelming. I am proud of myself either way for sticking to my guns. It wasn't easy to do so, mainly because the future is but a foggy brick pavement. I have to pull the cart hard enough to progress forward and yet I cannot tell what’s ahead. It can be scary and intimidating, as it is a lone battle in a foreign land and at a tempestuous time. Holding him in my arms today, there was a moment of silent calm. Rocking steadily to a muted beat, we were on the couch alone while the rest of my team went about setting up for the session. In a blue hoodie, the child was thumb sucking after a good fifteen minutes of tantrumming. If it’s true, that our eyes are windows into our souls, I wanted to tell him that things will be alright, and that we are working hard for him. We don’t ever want him to give up. I doubt he will ever understand, no matter how long I stared into his big brown eyes. That was then I realized we've held this eye contact for a while now. I smiled at my own silly thoughts. And as though replying to my sentiments, that child in my arms smiled along.

Q: I LOVE YOU SOOOO MUCH!

Girl's please, don't be like her. You'll be every guy's living nightmare, except for some odd few who enjoy such exuberant attention. Then again, she reminded me of this China girl I met during Orientation Week. Yes,  I actually had a dejavu moment upon the initial two minutes of this video. She freaked me out, but I'm glad we're  physically distant. I really dislike having to deal with stalker-ish issues. Just when I thought I was being paranoid, HJ had to point it out that both China girl and Laina (girl in video) share the same smile and gesture. Wow...

O yes, Liz had to pm AshleyM on the private chatbox to request a Post-it drawing of a narwhal from me. How on earth she knew I can draw is still a mystery to me.

All I have is,

Q: I'm trying to finish everything for learning tonight.

Creativity is just connecting things. When you ask creative people how they did something, they feel a little guilty because they didn't really do it, they just saw something. It seemed obvious to them after a while. That's because they were able to connect experiences they've had and synthesize new things.

Q: It's just a camel time of the week. Two humps in all!

Boy, I wish my life is as amusing as my blog wants it to portray. Well, it certainly met that criteria yesterday. First thing in the morning, I had the power circuit at my kitchen area down, deeming the fridge and microwave useless. Good thing I bought cereal, but it sucked still because that meant having warm grapes for dessert. Considering I wasn’t able to talk to the management people personally (whole day out) I dropped off a love letter at their office before I left on a Hopkins Shuttle to the institute.

I found out the Orioles was having a big game that day. Free pizzas abound, but I was in no mood for it. Chose to purchase a Jalapeno cheddar bagel instead, toasted and buttered to lunch perfection. Lunch kaki had the same thought, and despite the sudden contentment, I was summoned to the office. Apparently someone reported me, an accusation that I talked about a certain patient in the elevator. Beyond words, I offered a denial statement. My primary therapist was present to provide moral support. “I know better than to think it’s her doing. I believe in her words.” That meant a lot to me. Thank you.

Ran two sessions to end the day. Upon checking out, I was summoned again. What now, I wondered. Are they going to remove me from the place? A sit down talk with my SBA perhaps. I dreaded the worst. When I met the case coordinator, it certainly felt like one of those doomsday moments. They must be kidding me right? Four strangers and yes, my SBA was there in one of the seats beside my therapist. Talking through what happened, they mentioned that it was a mistake they made. Seeing very little Asians around, they can only “assume” it had to be someone from the unit. What they didn’t realize was the unit had another good handful of Asians they have yet to check on. Bottom line – no proof and I’m off the hook. I quickly went to shake my professor’s hand, grateful for the good words he may have put in for me.

Got home to settle my nerves, but the smoke detector decided to throw a party for me. Great, just great. Be careful what you wished for.

What an effing day!

Q: Chuck Norris does not need an umbrella, rain falls around him.

Sword Art Online paved a path into my past; a year of Maple Story with my little brother, slaying cute ass mushrooms and partying useless low level noobs (who we all know are after rare items and faster harvesting of experience points). My lack of interest in MMORPG was greatly boosted after coming back to reality from a brief 30 minute visit via the one shared desktop at my study room. For that one year, the world of Maple Story brought me a "momentary escape" from the real world; as much as I disliked my brother's choice of the character's job, his sudden splurge on cash cards to rare virtual pets, and his leech of a wife (who we all know might turned out to be a boy in disguise). In case you just realized, yes, I play Maple using my brother's character. No shame in that, I prefer shortcuts.

I digressed from the path again. So yes, sure enough this anime brought back plentiful memories of time wasted on the computer. Oh, and along with it, my mother's constant rant on chores not done. Stop, and back track woman. There. Okay, now you know why SOA is a must see for people who plays, played, might play MMORPG for the heck of it. I won't provide spoilers ever, but you know some stories are best told anime style. XD

500 Mesos please?

Q: Close, walk away and forget. Certain chapters in life have to be ended.

Nothing interesting today except for the continuous paper diving. Often times I really wish, all psychology terms are standardized. These relative dissimilarities are killing my brain cells. And to justify my time investment, I shan't quail at this! Over my horse plushie collection!

Also, someone thinks it's fun to drop by for an hour to distract me from studying. When I mentioned about my sore arm from carrying 12 cans of Mountain Dew, she responded by pinching my arm to search for the "elusive" muscle. What a terrible and scary woman. T-T

Commendable effort,

Q: About a year ago, PM said protest was not Malaysian culture. Now, PM says protest is a sign of a vibrant democracy.

A fracas broke out last night on the street beside my apartment. I could have sworn there were six males jostling about in the dark, yelling and throwing punches at one another. It was two in the morning, and they must be intoxicated. Oh, for the love of cops, where are they when you need them? The fight went on for 20 minutes until I saw one of them got down on his knees to feel his side. A broken rib, maybe? Didn't your momma tell you not to mess around with bad companies when you could have hold sobriety and attend school like every good Hopkins student should. Then again, I wasn't quite sure if they were Jays, nor was I certain the time I eventually went back to bed. These noises are proof of my reality here in Baltimore. Such is a city, such is America, and such will be so for me in the next two years to come.

Five chapter readings, five articles, and two take home quizzes. When will these ever end?

Q: Proud of myself by being useless.

My seemingly irrational procrastination mode was turned on from the moment I realized what a lovely day it was when I looked out the window. Blue skies are a reason to celebrate here since the coming fall has cleansed Baltimore with showers of rain, occasionally accompanied by storm warnings. Not that those sort of news brings agita to this young adult, much like the tornado warnings back in Kalamazoo, this calamity hardly ever descends upon the city. But I'll hold my tongue. Don't want to jinx my luck on it.

Anyway, I took the liberty to do some grocery shopping at Giant (good reason to walk). I haven't been quite as picky about my food off late. Baby carrots, rice, chicken, egg, an apple, and at least two slices of bread were like religious food to take daily, and I hardly ever mind repeating the menu, as long as my stomach's full. This week, I foresee stress and more assignments, so I let myself go on this one. Grapes, Mountain Dew, Nutella, chicken soup, and cereal were on my list; out of the window, "calorie watch"! That is one term I won't ever want to deal with right now.

Carrying those items and walking back was a real challenge, but as mission was completed, I can't help not beaming with smile. I had to sacrifice my inner layer of clothes to the laundry bag, heck that basket's piling up real quick day in and out. Speaking of procrastination, I wonder when am I going to get round to cleaning my work table. It's hella landfill-ish. *sigh*

Cousin brother's getting married right now! Congratulations Alvin Sing! Bigger responsibility from today onwards, old man. Be happy always. :)

Q: What doesn't kill you makes a fighter...

Our boy had a little big boy problem today in the bathroom. Diaper change didn't happen quite as smoothly as usual considering all four of us were giggling, embarrassed at the uncalled for situation. Lucky for us, one guy therapist was walking over to check out the commotion. He stealthily resolved the issue, while grinning widely saying, “hey, he’s growing up okay?”

Speaking about growing up, I used to have this recurring dream where I am back in my primary days, back when I drew Pikachu all over people’s textbooks and cared about what the cool kids thought. In my dream, AlvinT, the quiet kid with glasses, is crying by the lone stage at our school field. It’s been twelve years but still I deny memories with my hands, pretending not to notice.

Should I go to the Renaissance fair on Saturday or chill at home with articles and soy milk?

Seriously?

Q: You sure you haven't picked it up before this?

I have to be honest. I teared a little today. Not from my own circumstance, but a friend’s. We spoke over Skype today about someone we both knew in a distant past. She moved on to greater things and far away from people she surrounded herself with. “I am waiting for someone who will never come,” in a dismay tone, I realized he wasn’t over her. Not now, not since five years ago when they decided to walk their separate ways. Such loyalty is commendable. Such honesty is what touched hearts and I felt his open wound as though it was my own. Very strange, considering we’re miles apart and talking to our respective laptop screens. I exploited these state of mind for a good reason...

These tears dissipated into consistent fragile wind, forever filled with sunshine and melancholy. I whispered such desires to the universe, in hope, that she will hear me. My heart is crying, pleas, suffocating me, disemboweling all of my love, for sunflowers to smile, so you may live. So you may notice me for all of my apologies are tied to multicolored balloons. I longed to know the feel of my hands hovering above your heartbeat, to wonder for you to wonder.

Time has stood still for me my dear. Hear me; I am waiting for you only, only you, love.

Hang in there homey.

Uh, no,
Vonnie S.

Q: Someone will die if he knows you have KARA on your phone.

Finished with Exam 1 and I was already whistling on my way home. ShariM texted a congratulatory note (for what reason, only God knows), but I was sure she meant well. After jumping out of sleep last night at four in the morning going "what's multiple probe again?", I deserve a long uninterrupted sleep. Not until the mail lady wanted to talk about her son misbehaving in school (mental note to not flaunt my expertise around) and not until Pika got me to watch an episode of Khuntoria together. Bah, I realized after dinner and all that jazz, my hands were itching for some action. I drew a sleeping tiger. Yes, of all the wonderful sights in this world, I drew that with my black Zebra pen and trusty orange highlighter. While it's reminding me of hours lost with dawdling, it got me thinking that I should really start doing this all over again.

Trust me, I don't.

Q: Nothing is really lost until your mum can't find it.

It suddenly seems to me, I didn't see Fall standing on my doorstep until today. October, you are my beauty and treasure because if it wasn't for my dad, I wouldn't be here. The leaves were falling from the tree branches, and we can do nothing but to stare in silence. If only I had enough glue for all the fallen leaves and warmth, if only...

Light soymilk,
