Yesterday night I lay around after reviewing six chapters on learning. I wasn't doing anything, simply enjoying the evening on my back, staring at the ceiling. I never realized there were two detectors on my wall until then; my guess is one signals smoke and the other for carbon monoxide. The feeling of having a support to my back was great, quite the contrary, the prickly sensation that tormented me for the past eight hours was simply no joke. And there I positioned myself as though I was ready for bed, surrendering to gravity and the sound of the passing storm. The worst was over.
Sandy is a brat. She uprooted trees and buildings while the rest of us watch helplessly from the shelter. She tore Ocean City, a pier that I've heard so much about and yet not been there. She closed schools and offices for two days, the delay brought an additional week into our semester schedule. She left hundreds of thousands in the dark. There is so much bad to this hurricane on the news and I have to agree, she was an inevitable, cumbersome pain. Now that she's moved on to other parts, life in Maryland can press the "play" button tomorrow. The storm left many in pieces, but she left me with a truth. In a weird sense, I am at peace with myself and others.
Thank you especially to Lihee and MelC for keeping me positive through the ordeal.
Thank you to the rest of you who called, wrote, or texted as well. International or local, you people gave me the reason to believe in humanity!
Why weren't we?
