E: Gong Xi Fa Cai!

Happy Chinese New Year, dear readers! I was hoping this city gets painted red this week, for it would give me plenty of reasons to celebrate this auspicious rebirth of the Snake year. Unfortunately, the Americans could care less, in fact none of them bothered to wish me, with the exception of the usual “how are you?” I am not offended either. Not everyone is culture conscious, per se, so I appreciated it that the few Asian Americans did take the effort to share a little happiness with me. It is upsetting that I am away from home during this time of the year, but one has to realize that this sacrifice would be worthwhile. Eventually, I’ll be moving back closer to home and being alone on festival days will be but a distant memory. I could use such encouraging thoughts for now.

Anyway, here’s to wishing all of you a happy, healthy, wealthy, and awesome new year! For those of you who are snakies, may it be YOUR year homies!

Red pau,
Vonnie S.
